Hooks for Heroes is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization incorporated in the State of New York, dedicated to supporting America's veterans and first responders through fishing as a positive outlet. Founded by a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, former NYPD police officer, and current FDNY firefighter, our organization was built on firsthand experience with the physical, emotional, and mental challenges that often accompany a lifetime of service.
As passionate anglers, we understand the peace, healing, and perspective that time on the water can provide. Fishing has been a positive outlet in our own lives, and we believe every hero deserves the opportunity to experience those same benefits.
Our mission is simple: to provide veterans and first responders with complimentary fishing trips aboard local charter boats, offering them a chance to step away from the stresses of daily life, reconnect with nature, and enjoy the camaraderie of others who understand their experiences. Each trip includes snacks, water, and refreshments, and when possible, transportation to and from the dock.
The invisible wounds of service can be just as devastating as physical injuries. Many veterans and first responders live with post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, and other service-related challenges. While public awareness has grown, far too many continue to struggle in silence. Our goal is to provide a supportive environment where healing conversations can happen naturally, friendships can form, and participants can simply enjoy a day free from the weight of their responsibilities.
We are equally committed to supporting our nation's first responders. Every day, police officers, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, and other emergency personnel witness traumatic events while protecting our communities. Like our veterans, they face an increased risk of post-traumatic stress and other mental health challenges due to the nature of their work. They deserve opportunities to decompress, recharge, and know that their sacrifices are recognized and appreciated.
Many of our heroes also live with permanent disabilities, chronic illnesses, or life-changing injuries sustained while serving others. These courageous men and women have sacrificed so much on behalf of our country and communities, and they deserve opportunities to enjoy meaningful experiences that promote both physical and emotional well-being.
Fishing is more than a recreational activity—it can be therapeutic. A day on the water encourages relaxation, mindfulness, connection, and hope. Sharing that experience with fellow veterans and first responders creates a sense of belonging that can be incredibly powerful. While fishing is not a replacement for professional medical or mental health care, it can serve as a valuable complement by reducing stress, building community, and providing a positive outlet during difficult times.
At Hooks for Heroes, we believe that even one meaningful day can make a lasting difference. If one fishing trip helps someone find hope, reconnect with others, or choose to keep moving forward, then our mission is making an impact.
With the generosity of our supporters, volunteers, and community partners, we can continue giving back to the heroes who have given so much for all of us. Together, we can honor their service, support their healing, and remind them they are never alone.
